One Minute Overview- Improve your shower knowledge Electric Showers Electric Showers require cold water only which is heated instantly to provide a hot shower. – An electric shower only heats the water you use once the shower is switched on. It does not use the hot water heated or stored by the household water system – An electric shower is always ready to use 24 hours a day seven days a week -The higher the kilowatt power rating (kW) the better performance and greater the flow of heated water Mixer Showers Mixer showers require hot and cold water which is ‘mixed’ together to provide a hot shower. – Mixer showers use the hot water heated by the household water system – Generally produce higher flow rates compared to electric showers – Mixer showers must be matched to your household water system. High pressure systems such as combi boilers, are ideal for mixer showers -Add a pump on a low pressure systems to to boost water flow rates Power Showers Power showers require hot and cold water which is ‘mixed’ together and the built in pump increases water flow, to provide a hot shower. -Power showers are made for use on low pressure systems only. An internal pump increases the flow of water to provide a powerful shower – Power showers are not to be confused with electric showers as they do not heat water -Generally produce higher flow rates than electric showers and many mixer showers Gravity fed hot water system This system has a cold water tank in the loft or in the top of the airing cupboard and a hot water cylinder below it. The water in the cylinder is heated by a boiler or an electric immersion heater and fed to taps via a pipe from the top of the cylinder. As the hot water in the cylinder is used up, it is replaced with cold water from the tank above, which in turn is refilled from the mains water supply via a float operated valve. System water pressure is usually low. To give a higher pressure and flow rate from a mixer shower a booster pump can be installed. Gravity fed hot water system with Booster Pump This system has a cold water tank in the loft or in the top of the airing cupboard and a hot water cylinder below it. System water pressure is increased due to the addition of a Booster Pump. Unvented System An unvented system has a hot water cylinder that is connected directly to the mains cold water supply and there is no need for a cold water tank in the home. The water is heated by a boiler or an electric immersion heater. As everything is under the pressure of mains water, the flow rates from taps and showers are much better and a pump is not needed to get a powerful shower. An unvented cylinder can be installed virtually anywhere e.g. in an airing cupboard or garage. Combination Boiler A combi – boiler can be located anywhere within the home. More often wall mounted but some are floor mounted. It heats water ‘on demand’ when a hot tap or mixer shower is turned on. Connected directly to the mains cold water supply at high pressure there is no need for a hot water cylinder, cold water tank or shower pump in the home.
